The blockchain ecosystem has seen exponential development of use cases, but the increasing fragmentation presents a challenge for developers and users.
Interoperability protocols have been developed to unify blockchains and eliminate cumbersome transactional processes between cross-chain protocols.
Examples of interoperability protocols that provide cross-chain functionality include:
Polkadot: A sharded multichain network allowing for interoperability between blockchains through its relay chain.
Cosmos: A decentralized network of independent parallel blockchains that allows for communication and exchange of tokens across different chains through the Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) protocol.
These protocols aim to solve the challenge of interoperability and provide a simpler, more accessible DeFi experience by allowing users to exchange assets between different blockchain networks with ease.
However, despite the development of existing interoperability protocols, there are still challenges to achieving seamless interoperability in the DeFi ecosystem. These challenges include the isolation of dApps to specific chains, using intermediaries as asset bridges, and the inefficiency and cost of wrapping assets.
Enter LayerZero, the first trustless omnichain interoperability layer that supports direct cross-chain messaging. It allows developers to have wallets where users do not need to know what chain they are on but can interact with any chain. That opens up vast opportunities for dApp design.

What is LayerZero?
LayerZero is a protocol that enables cross-chain interoperability, facilitating the exchange of messages across different blockchain networks.
Decentralized exchanges (DEXs) strive to minimize trust compared to traditional exchanges but still require some trust, especially when exchanging tokens between different blockchain networks.
LayerZero is the first trustless interoperability protocol that relies on two independent entities (a relayer and an oracle) to enable cross-chain transfers, eliminating the complexities of side chains, wrapped tokens, or relay chains.
LayerZero differs from existing interoperability protocols in that it enables direct cross-chain messaging, eliminating the need for intermediaries such as side chains, wrapped tokens, or relay chains. More technically, LayerZero allows lightweight message passage across chains, providing authentic and guaranteed message delivery with configurable trustlessness.
How does LayerZero Work?
LayerZero powers a new functionality for interchain swaps within the DeFi ecosystem, enabling users to exchange assets on different blockchain networks with a single transaction and gas fee. The protocol will power cross-chain information transfers in the dApps available on various blockchain networks.
For example, if a user wanted to exchange ETH for BTC, they would send their ETH to a relayer on the LayerZero network, which would then send a message to an oracle asking for the current BTC/ETH exchange rate. The oracle would then respond with the current exchange rate, which the relayer would use to convert the user's ETH into BTC and send it back to the user on the BTC network. This entire process happens in a single transaction and with a single gas fee.
Similarly, say an Ethereum-based protocol like 1inch wanted to build a cross-chain swap feature. With some engineering effort, that could be done fast and securely from the 1inch UI with LayerZero on the backend, and all with a single transaction and gas fee.
By enabling cross-chain swaps, LayerZero allows for the seamless trading of assets between different blockchain networks, ensuring a simpler, more accessible DeFi experience.
In summary, LayerZero is a protocol offering a trustless, efficient, and cost-effective solution for interchain swaps. It eliminates the complexities of side chains, wrapped tokens, or relay chains, allowing for seamless trading of assets between different blockchain networks. With the use of LayerZero, possibilities for DeFi interoperability are increased significantly.
